From all outward appearances, the U.S. payments system looks and acts like a finely woven fabric. Check, EFT, card and hybrid payment methods often coexist in seeming harmony. But in reality, the technological interconnections between these different payment systems are rather tenuous.

The check system, for example, is supported by big-iron banking systems that have perfected the art of clearing paper payments for pennies a transaction. Card and EFT payments, meanwhile, are cleared through transaction processing platforms that are gatewayed together, yet are operated primarily outside the government-regulated banking system.

And it’s not just the core technologies that differentiate payment systems. There are entirely different risk factors, pricing mechanisms, settlement processes and legal oversight issues that must be considered as part of the integration of payments into individual business plans.
